State laws, regulations and rules affecting septic systems within New Hampshire are controlled by the N.H. Department N. H. Department of Environmental Services' Sub-surface Systems Bureau, 6 Hazen Drive, PO Box 95, Concord, NH 03302-0095, Tel. (603) 271-2503.

New Hampshire state law Revised Statutes Annotated 485-A is the law regulating the design and installation of sub-surface waste disposal systems, and legislation enabling establishment of specific rules. N. H. Department of Environmental Services' EnvWs-1000 Rules determine how septic systems are to be designed and constructed.

If designing or installing septic systems near rivers, streams, ponds and lakes, the state's shoreland protection act may apply.
